`HOME MOVIES . . . apr 07

i've been watching home movie for a while now but i thought it was time to give them credit. home movies is an american cartoon for adults. the humor is dry and subtle, the characters become hilarious once you know get to know them. for four seasons it appeared on cartoon network before it was axed but i see it as the funniest american comedic cartoon.

`MONSOON WEDDING . . . mar 07

This moving showed the chaos and importance of an indian wedding. you can see through this movie how weddings and marriage have such a different set of values and attitudes in indian than in the US. Shot in a style that made you feel as if you were simply observing it. It breaks down what can be a confusing culture to a western view in a nice, entertaining, yet subtly informative way.

`TONY TAKITANI . . . nov 06

An interesting look into lonelyness. This film through never anything but subtle things protrays the bitterness of isolation. The concept of clothing between a person's identity is an interesting way to show lonelyness. The music by ryuichi sakamoto is a perfect complement to and inherently part of the film

`HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE . . . 05

Where to begin... My hopes were high for miyazaki's newest film and he did not disappoint. this film is great, like usual miyazaki flies off in one unexpected direction after the other. it's captivating and unique in every scene. definetly worth seeing even if you don't like animation. i don't think anyone can make a movie that appeals to adults as much as it does, while still appealing to kids, like miyazaki.
`APRIL STORY . . . 05

This movie is by the same director of Lily Chou Chou, of course with lily being such an amazing movie, i had high expectations for this one. it didn't let me down. although it was not at all what i thought. this movie is one fo the most unique ive seen in some time. it is extremely simple and plain but captures the little things of life in new way. it has become one of my all time favs.
`NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF WIND . . . 05

miyazaki's first big movie, a interesting stoyline about pollution, waring countries, and doing what's right. kinda similar to princess mononoke.
`MILLENIUM ACTRESS . . . 05

this is one of the most unique anime movies i've seen. it has a strange style of storytelling. it's a drama that tracks the life of a fictionaly famous actress in japan through an interview that's being conducted. for those who dont like the fanatasy elements sometimes present in anime and want a movie that is not at directed toward kids, this is it. directed by satoshi kon, liscensed to dreamworks
`FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST (hagane no renkinjutsushi) . . . 05

one of the best series ive seen in 3 - 5 years, multi-layed storyline that doesnt mindless wander off just to fill up episodes. great character developement, and packed with various levels of symbolism and meaning.

classics
LILY CHOU CHOU: KOKYU
(chou chou is pronounced shu-shu) lily chou chou (aka salyu) is a cd i listen to almost everyday. there is no other album that conveys raw mood and emotion like this one does. you dont have understand japanese to feel the meaning.
JARS OF CLAY: JARS OF CLAY
maybe partly out of nostolgia, this cd has stood the test of time. i just love the strange mix of hard-hitting beats (almost dance or hip-hop like) with acoustic folk. additionally the lyrics say a lot. however i cannot say im a fan of the new JOC stuff.
MASSIVE ATTACK: 100th WINDOW
i just cant get enough of this cd, it's my favorite nighttime/depressed/upset music to listen to. although straying from it's trip-hop roots a bit, it's some of the best "electronica" out there.
RADIOHEAD: KID A
some people hated it, i love it
BECK: SEACHANGE
LOST IN TRANSLATION SOUNDTRACK
SIGUR ROS: TAKK

RETAIL RECKLESSNESS . . . 05
this is a very common sight in the suburbs of detroit. as the years go by more and strip malls, houses, condos, etc are created and then abandoned only years later to be replaced (often in the north) by entirely new places needless built in green undeveloped areas....SEE ILLUSTRATION

SUGAR MADNESS . . . 05
"New evidence shows that 1 in 3 Americans born in 2000 will develop diabetes sometime during their lifetime..."
we could start by consuming less sugar. sugar challenge: go thru an entire week without consuming ANY beverage with sugar, and keep the food sugar content to a minimum. we need healthier habits and influence on others as well... 1 in 3 born in 2000

DESTROYING HISTORY . . . 05
several months ago two historic buildings in detroit (the madison and lenox hotel), both under the protection of the National Trust of Historic Preservation were secretly demolished. showing the complete disregard the city's decision makers have for authority and just plain common sense. detroit needs to be saved and mostly saved from it's leaders and decision makers SAVE DETROIT
